Repairing your electronic device is a time consuming and complicated process. Fixing your electronic device correctly saves time and money for companies and end users alike. To complete a repair process, one must have a good knowledge of the equipment, tools, and work instructions. Here are five common poor repair practices that will result in a failed repair.
1. Not using the proper tools. Having the right tools for the job is the start of any efficient repair process. Using the wrong tool to extract a part or connect a module can bankrupt the repair, and result in replacing what is damaged. We recommend using an electrostatic discharge (ESD) safe tool. You do not want accidentally zap your electronic device with static electricity, as it can short or fry the components.
2. Not using the correct replacement parts. Knowing what parts to use start with accurately identifying any part numbers or model numbers on the defective part. When electronic devices are built, they use specific parts that will only work with the set up on that electronic device. Using the wrong part can result in further damage to the product. For example, when repairing a motherboard on a component level, there are many types of capacitors. Capacitors look very similar and can easily be misidentified. Having a keen eye on the original part number can prevent further MB damage simply by using the correct capacitor.
3. Careless and inattentive focus. Electronic devices have a multitude of connections that can easily be overlooked. Missing a connector plug or two can cause the unit to malfunction or not operate at all. Check the parts and connections thoroughly, and do not rush through this process.
4. Cleaning your device regularly. Keeping the surface and ports clean is an excellent method to maintain an electronic device, but it is only part of keeping a unit clean and free of debris. We see a significant percentage of devices fail due to the buildup of dirt and grime on the internal parts. The majority of electronic devices have air ventilation to keep the components cool, which can lead to dirt and debris to “gunk” up internal parts. This can cause faulty connections between the circuits. Thoroughly cleaning each part is an excellent repair practice and should be followed by any repair.
5. Uninformed technicians. The quality of the work instructions significantly impacts the repair process. If the specialist is miss-informed on how to fix the unit, the process is doomed from the start. Having proper knowledge of the product and standard operation procedure to repair the unit is essential for any repair process. Make sure to have any manufacturer’s notes and manuals on the unit before attempting to fix any electronic device.
As in any field, knowledge is a large part of completed any process correctly, thoroughly, and efficiently. Avoiding these common bad repair practices will lead to a greater yield in a repair process and help build knowledgeable experiences for future repairs.
